But for the long term, Cashman’s handling of the team and it’s prospects gets an F grade. His signings have been the worst ever for the Yankees. He lost getting Carol Crawford to the Red Sox. He lost both Halladay and Lee to the best team in baseball now, the Phillies. They now have the four best starters in baseball: Holladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels. Correct that. They have the best five starters in the majors, too: Add to the list of four the name of Joe Blanton. Wow!
MLB Standings Phillies Pitcher #2: Cliff Lee
MLB Standings Phillies Pitcher #3: Cole Hamels
But this novice Brian Cashman thinks he doing a good job. Good job, against what standard. You can’t even sign Lee to $30 million more than Philadelphia signed him for. What’s that? It’s lack of confidence in the team, and who should be the best cheerleader for the team? the GM, of course. But Brian Cashman isn’t even a good cheer leader, is he? No, he goes out to drink all night with a reporter friend and says now Boston is a better team than the Yankees. With that statement alone, Mr. Steinbrenners, I would fire that ###?^^^ He doesn’t deserve to even call himself a Yankee GM.
But, ironically, he is probably telling the truth. Cashman’s ineptness has caused the Yankees to fall behind Boston in signing the real good ones – people like Carl Crawford for left field. Now Boston has one of the fastest outfields in baseball. Watch this this summer circle the bases. While the Yankees are slow afoot.
Next, Cashman doesn’t tell Jeeter about it, but he tells his drunken friend that he’s moving jeeter to the outfield this year. That, alone, has got to cost Cashman a lot of popularity in the dugout. Jeeter must be seething. He probably would have been better had he opted out of his contract – he was a free agent – and gone with Tampa. Then he could go home each night and sleep with his wife. If only he had a wife. Maybe he would consider settling down and getting a wife if he was at home more often. Here’s a story about the signing of Freddie Garcia who hasn’t been real good for 9 years when he made the American League all-star team.
I wish Colon and Garcia my best. But I do not expect them to become starters for the Yankees. If aging Andy Pettit doesn’t come back this team won’t make the playoffs next year. they might end up last or in third place in the American League East. Thanks, Cashman. You may have your own team, but it’s getting “older and slower” each year.
