Three questions to Marwan Bishara

By Marwan Bishara in Imperium on December 16th, 2010

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst comments on the US administration’s
review of its military strategy in Afghanistan.
Why a review of the military strategy in Afghanistan?
Releasing the review is an exercise in public diplomacy; it marks the
first year anniversary of President Barack Obama’s speech last year
that laid out his surge strategy to avoid losing the war in Afghanistan.
During long and difficult deliberation with his national security team in
2009, the president was sceptical of the generals and hardliners’
argument for surge of troops without clear benchmarks and for a major
escalation without exist strategy, according to Bob Woodward inside
account of the White House meetings in Obama’s Wars. Today, his
administration is offering what is deemed balance sheet that shows
“progress” but also difficult challenges ahead.

US wars: People vs

While the Obama administration continues to affirm its intention
to withdraw US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, the US’ military
presence in the Muslim world is actually expanding and this is
exacerbating tensions and inflaming animosities.

Barack Obama’s promise to open a new page with the Muslim

world on the basis of mutual respect and interests – supplemented
and enforced by the use of soft rather than hard power – now rings hollow.

This is most evident in the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq

and the corresponding surge in Afghanistan – an exercise in
redeploying military forces, not extracting them.

As the gap between words and deeds; declarations and policies;

public diplomacy and military strategy deepens, so the political and
strategic crisis facing the Obama administration continues to deepen.

Western wars vs. Muslim women

By Marwan Bishara in Imperium on August 5th, 2010
Western media is awash with reports about Taliban
mistreatment of women in Afghanistan and Pakistan
that feature countless voices in support of the war to

secure a ‘brighter future for women’s rights’.
If Western wars ‘liberate’ Eastern women,
Muslim women
would be – after centuries of Western
military interventions –
the most ‘liberated’ in the world.
They are not, and will not be,
especially when liberty is associated with Western hegemony.

Afghanistan has had its share of British, Russian and American

military intervention to no avail.

Wars, lies and lyrics

Surprise, surprise … the US government did not tell the whole truth,

yet again, about its war conduct, and indeed misled the public
about the true record of the war.

I personally have not met anyone who has been shocked by the

revelations in the documents published by WikiLeaks, but many
are surprised – not so much by the novelty of it all, but rather by
the mundane repetition of more of the same deception.

It is déjà vu all over again. Governments lie, especially about

war and violence.

Is Israel a liability for the US?

By Marwan Bishara in Imperium on July 28th, 2010

Last week, the Nixon Center sponsored a debate between pro-Israeli

Washington Institute executive director Robert Satloff and Chas Freeman, a
former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia and an opponent of unconditional US
support to Israel. The subject was whether Israel is an asset or liability to

US strategic interests.

>Bush Was Wrong: The Muslim World Has Not Just Hijacked Islam, Islam Itself Is A Danger To the United States

>What A Great Day – With Glenn Beck At The Helm We Shall Not Fail!

The following comes to us via Hillsdale College, Imprimis.
By Brian Kennedy
President, the Claremont Institute

We are often told that we possess the most powerful military in the world and that we will face no serious theat for years to come. We are comforted by three basic assurances aimed at deflecting any serious discussion of national security: 1) that Islam is a religion of peace; 2) that we will never go to war with China because our economic interests are intertwined, and 3) that America won the cold war and Russia is no longer our enemy. But these reassurances are myths propagated on the left and right alike.

We believe them at our peril because serious threats are already upon us.

Let me begin with Islam. We were assured that it was a religion of peace immediately following September 11. President Bush, a good man, believed or was persuaded that true Islam was not any different than Judaism or Christianity. He said in a speech in October, 2001, just a month after the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon: “Islam is a vibrant faith..We honor its traditions. Our enemy does not. Our enemy does not follow the great traditions of Islam. They’ve hijacked a great religion.” But unfortunately Mr. Bush was trying to understand Islam as we would like it to be rather than how countless devout Muslims understand it.
(this is the first part of a four-part article taken from Brian T. Kennedy’s speech on January 11, 2011 in “the First Principles on First Friday’s” lecture series sponsored by Hillsdale Kirby Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington D.C.)

>In Twenty Years Muslims Will Own America

My thoughts first.  The above mentioned article is below the red.
Back in 1957, Naomi W. Randall wrote one of my favorite songs entitled, “I Am A Child Of God”.  It goes on to say:
And He has sent me here,
Has given me an earthly home,
With parents kind and dear.
The last line of the chorus originally read:
Teach me all that I must know
To live with Him someday.
Our church leaders loved the song but asked if the author would change the word ‘know’ to ‘do’.  It now reads:
Teach me all that I must do
To live with Him someday.
We can read scriptures all day and/or study intently the forces that are destroying this nation but  knowledge without action will not save this nation or ourselves.  We will all have to stand before the Lord some day and give an accounting of our actions or inactions.  I know he is going to ask me what I did while here to preserve the constitution that He inspired our founders to write.
So this is what I am doing.  I have 6 groups of 30 each that I send Emails to.  I could probably send a dozen a day to each of you but I try to pick and choose.  There are so many sites out there that will send you the latest info on the situations in this country as well as the world.  They are free and just require you to sign up for their Emails.  Then there is talk radio and Fox TV.  We automatically record Glenn Beck every night to play back at a more convenient hour.  He is on at 5PM and repeated at 2AM ET.  He has done a fabulous job of educating the public about the founders of this nation and also naming those who are trying to destroy us.  He, his staff and family as well as others who are naming names, need our daily prayers.  If anyone is interested, I will send you a list of the sites I subscribe to.  Also, if you do not have time for talk radio, the hosts all have web sites you can click on and be brought up to date.
Once you have become knowledgeable, you need to write to your legislators, both national and state.  Go to, type in your zip code and you have all the addresses you need.  There are so many issues that are important and they need to hear your voices.  It may seem discouraging but we are having an effect.  Those who are up for election are beginning to realize the overwhelming majority are NOT in favor of the course the present administration is taking.  PLEASE take the time to Email, fax, write or call them.
Some of the issues:
Yes Border Fence.  Need to tell our state legislators as well as feds that we support Arizona governor and if necessary would support our state doing the same if it should become necessary.
No Amnesty.  The president wants amnesty because he is losing votes and perhaps congress this coming November.  If the illegals are given citizenship (amnesty gives them full rights to vote) he hopes they will all vote his way.  Instead the illegals should be rounded up, given a green card which will allow them to work and pay taxes on what they earn, thereby relieving the burden from the rest of us for their health care, teachers, schools etc.  If not able to find work within a certain time frame, they will have to leave.  Employers hiring illegals would be heavily fined.  This will open up many jobs for our unemployed citizens.  No other country allows people to come in and stay unless they show meaningful ways to support themselves.
NO Government Run Health Care.  Many states are drafting ‘opt out’ legislation.  Our legislators need to know you support their actions.  New figures are continually coming forth stating everything will cost much more than earlier stated.  There will be rationing and people will no longer be in control of their health.  We and our children will be burdened with taxes and nothing to show for it.
NO Cap and Trade.  We knew from the beginning it was a hoax when Al Gorestationed his testing equipment adjacent to paved parking lots etc. to show ‘global warming‘  Then the Emails of the scientists surfaced further substantiating there had been deceit all along.  Mr. Gore as well as GE and others have set up companies that will make them very rich if this were to pass.  Our president has told us our electric bills will necessarily double if this passes.  Gas has been estimated to be at least $7 a gallon. WRITE CONGRESS!
NO Fairness Act.  If this passes union workers, as well as non union workers would no longer be able to vote in secret.  They want some bully to be standing over you to see that you vote ‘their way’.  Should be called the unfairness act.  Our president has been a union organizer for years.  Once he has everyone organized they will be his bully army.
Their are dozens of other issues.  The president has been signing one executive order after another to bypass congress and our scrutiny. And did you know he recently ‘loaned’ Venezuela 2 billion dollars for offshore oil exploration?  George Sorros owns a huge amount of stock in that company.  He is also the big financial supporter behind Obama’s programs. Much of our oil and gas rich land in this country has recently been declared federal land and cannot be drilled or mined.  And of course off shore drilling would pollute the world atmosphere.  Funny!  Apparently that is OK in Venezuela.
The things our kids are being taught in school is another example of the control such unions have.  No wonder more people are home schooling.  But if our government has it’s way, that will soon be outlawed.  It is in some states.
One last thing.  It was announce that Hillary, our Secretary of state, has told the UN we will sign a treaty with them to ban small arms.  Translated that means gun control.  Any treaty we signed and is ratified by congress will supercede our constitution.  Think about that one!
Please, people.  We don’t have to carry a gun and go to the front lines to defend this country so we should be willing to take a few moments to become informed and write our congressman.  Sign up for some of these sites.  They make it really easy by writing a fax or email for you which, if you agree, you can send as is or alter to suit your thoughts.
The following was just sent to me by a dear friend.  I have read similar articles before.  Have also read how the Islams are very well organized.  When their numbers reach a certain percentage in a given area, they then demand Sharia Law.  This has been done in EnglandFrance and the Scandinavian countries.  As you will see from the article below, it has happened in certain areas in this country already.  The goal is to convert everyone by force or eliminate them.
Please help save this nation.  Mom/Gram/Joan

Joys of Muslim Women
by Nonie Darwish

In the Muslim faith a Muslim man can marry a child as young as 1 year old and have sexual intimacy with this child. Consummating the marriage by 9.
The dowry is given to the family in exchange for the woman (who becomes his slave) and for the purchase of the private parts of the woman, to use her as a toy.

Even though a woman is abused she can not obtain a divorce.
To prove rape, the woman must have (4) male witnesses.
Often after a woman has been raped, she is returned to her family and the family must return the dowry.  The family has the right to execute her (an honor killing) to restore the honor of the family. Husbands can beat their wives ‘at will’ and he does not have to say why he has beaten her.

The husband is permitted to have (4 wives) and a temporary wife for an hour (prostitute) at his discretion.

The Shariah Muslim law controls the private as well as the public life of the woman.

In the West World ( America ) Muslim men are starting to demand Shariah Law so the wife can not obtain a divorce and he can have full and complete control of her.  It is amazing and alarming how many of our sisters and daughters attending American Universities are now marrying Muslim men and submitting themselves and their children unsuspectingly to theShariah law.

By passing this on, enlightened American women may avoid becoming a slave under Shariah Law.
Ripping the West in Two.
Author and lecturer Nonie Darwish says the goal of radical Islamists is to impose Shariah law on the world, ripping Western law and liberty in two.

She recently authored the book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law.

Darwish was born in Cairo and spent her childhood in Egypt and Gaza  before immigrating to America in 1978, when she was eight years old. Her father died while leading covert attacks on  Israel .  He was a high-ranking Egyptian military officer stationed with his family in Gaza .

When he died, he was considered a “shahid,” a martyr for jihad. His posthumous status earned Nonie and her family an elevated position in Muslim society.

But Darwish developed a skeptical eye at an early age. She questioned her own Muslim cultureand upbringing.. She converted to Christianity after hearing a Christian preacher on television.
In her latest book, Darwish warns about creeping sharia law – what it is, what it means, and how it is manifested in Islamic countries.

For the West, she says radical Islamists are working to impose sharia on the world. If that happens, Western civilization will be destroyed.Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual.  Islamic law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in this world.
Peace and prosperity for one’s children is not as important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle East and eventually in the world.

While Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the golden rule, Sharia teaches two systems of ethics – one for Muslims and another for non-Muslims. Building on tribal practices of the seventh century, Sharia encourages the side of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others.

While Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a personal understanding of and relationship with God, Sharia advocates executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted as criticism.
It’s hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be executed. Sadly, while talk of an Islamic reformationis common and even assumed by many in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through intimidation.

While Westerners are accustomed to an increase in religious tolerance over time, Darwish explains how petro dollars are being used to grow an extremely intolerant form of political Islam in her native Egypt and elsewhere.

(In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the  U.S.   to elect the President by themselves! Rest assured they will do so… You can look at how they have taken over several towns in the USA .. Dearborn Mich. is one… and there are others…)

I think everyone in the U.S. should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on!

It is too bad that so many are disillusioned with life and Christianity to accept Muslims as peaceful.. some may be but they have an army that is willing to shed blood in the name of Islam.. the peaceful support the warriors with their finances and own kind of patriotism to their religion. While America is getting rid of Christianity from all public sites and erasing God from the lives of children the Muslims are planning a great jihad on America .

This is your chance to make a difference…! Pass it on to your email list or at least those you think will listen..

Christianity. Note that in the NSRI and ARIS studies, based on self-identification, Christianity includes: Catholic, Baptist, Protestant, Methodist/Wesleyan, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Pentecostal/Charismatic, Episcopalian/Anglican, Mormon/Latter-day Saints/LDS, Churches of Christ, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh-Day Adventist, Assemblies of God, Holiness/Holy, Congregational/United Church of Christ, Church of the Nazarine, Church of God, Eastern Orthodox, Evangelical, Mennonite, Christian Science, Church of the Brethren, Born Again, Nondenominational Christians, Disciples of Christ, Reformed/Dutch Reformed, Apostolic/New Apostolic, Quaker, Full Gospel, Christian Reform, Foursquare Gospel, Fundamentalist, Salvation Army, Independent Christian Church, Covenant Church, Jewish Christians, plus 240,000 adults classified as “other” (who did not fall into the preceding groups).

Islam. In recent years Muslim leaders in the United States have optimistically estimated that there were approximately 6.5 million Muslims in the country (Aly Abuzaakouk, American Muslim Council, 1999). In 1998 a Pakistani newspaper even reported that there were 12 million Muslims in the United States (4.2% of the total population)! After the events of September 11, 2001, many newspaper accounts included an estimate of 8 million American Muslims. This would equate to 3% of the U.S. population, or roughly 1 in every 33 people in the country. No comparable figure has ever been confirmed by independent research similar to the Kosmin or Glenmary studies, or the Gallup, Harris, Pew, Barna polls. Currently, surveys consistently report less than 1% of people surveyed identify themselves as Muslims. Muslim community leaders say that many American Muslims are relatively recent immigrants who either do not have telephone service, do not participate in surveys or are afraid to identify themselves as Muslims for fear of anti-Muslim discrimination. Researchers generally agree that the estimate of 300,000 Muslims in the Kosmin study (1990) and Kosmin’s adjusted estimate (to 500,000) are too small to reflect current (year 2005) numbers of American Muslims. In 2004 the National Study of Youth and Religion conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (sample size: 3,370 teens nationwide) found that less than one half of one percent (0.5%) of American teens were Muslim, a proportion right in line with the adult Muslim population, based on other studies. Tom W. Smith of the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago is a nationally recognized expert in survey research specializing in the study of social change and survey methodology. Smith published “Estimating the Muslim Population in the United States” in 2001. This is probably the most thorough academic study of this topic in recent years. This study concluded: “The best, adjusted, survey-based estimates put the adult Muslim population in 2000 at 0.67 percent or 1,401,000, and the total Muslim population at 1,886,000. Even if high-side estimates based on local surveys, figures from mosques, and ancestry and immigration statistics are given more weight than the survey-based numbers, it is hard to accept estimates that Muslims are greater than 1 percent of the population (2,090,000 adults or 2,814,000 total).” Additional articles and links are here: Number of Muslims in the United States.

Jews and Judaism. The American Jewish Identity Survey of 2000, conducted by Barry Kosmin, Egon Mayer, and Ariela Keysar at the Center for Jewish Studies at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, concluded that there were 5.5 million Jews in the United States. Of these, 1.4 million were aligned with a religion other than Judaism, 1.4 million were secular or non-religious, leaving 51% of American Jews (just over 3 million people) whose religion was Judaism. The study surveyed 50,000 randomly selected adult Americans. More.

Baha’i. Some representatives of the Baha’i Faith have questioned their omission from the 1990 NSRI “Top 10” list. The NSRI study indicated there were 28,000 self-identified Baha’is in the United States in 1990, making them the 11th largest religion in the country. If one excludes the “nonreligious” and “agnostic” categories from this list, then the Kosmin study would place Baha’is as the 9th largest religion in the U.S.

Although the Kosmin study is well-respected, it should be noted that even with a random sample of such unprecedented size (113,000 respondents), the practical margin of error for this study was high for relatively smaller groups — those with less than 300,000 individuals. In this study, there were a few more respondents who said they were Scientologists or Native American religionists than said they were Baha’is. But given the margin of error, it is possible that in 1990 there were actually more Baha’is. This would be the case especially if, as some Baha’is suggested in response to these findings, there were a high proportion of Baha’is who lived communally and did not have phones for each family, or were recent Iranian immigrants reluctant to identify their Baha’i affiliation over the phone because of past persecution. In 1990 the Baha’i world faith itself claimed 110,000 adherents in the United States. If there were 110,000 self-identified Baha’is in 1990 they would have ranked as the 9th largest U.S. religion (assuming that the other Kosmin figures are accurate).

It is quite possible that growth within this group during this last 9 years has outpaced growth of some other groups, and that Baha’is are now among America’s ten largest religions. But this proposition has not been verified empirically and similar claims of recent growth have also been made by the other groups. Current official estimates from the Baha’i National Spiritual Assembly for the U.S. Baha’i population are about 113,000, or about 0.05% of the U.S. population. On 31 March 2000 received information from the U.S. National Spiritual Assembly listing the number of U.S. Baha’is at 133,709. A non-Baha’i historian from the University of Michigan who has scrutinized American Baha’i statistical practices has estimated a current (1999) figure of about 60,000 self-identified Baha’is in the U.S. But, with the ARIS survey now estimating 84,000 adult self-identified Baha’is in the U.S. in the year 2001, it appears that that historian’s estimate is too low. If children are included and a slight undercount assumed, it is quite possible that there were closer to 100,000 (perhaps more) Baha’is in the U.S. in 2001.

It may also be noted that Baha’is are ranked as one of the world’s ten largest international religious bodies and are among the top ten largest organized religions in the world, based on their current reported estimated membership.

Neo-pagan/Wiccan: There were 768,400 Neo-pagans (largest subset were Wiccans) in the U.S. in the year 2000, according to the Wiccan/Pagan Poll, conducted by the Covenant of the Goddess (CoG) beginning in late July, 1999. [Online source:] The Covenant of the Goddess (CoG) poll methodology is not comparable to methodology used in the Kosmin NSRI/ARIS studies, Harris Poll, Gallup polls, or Glenmary study. In 2004 the National Study of Youth and Religion conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (sample size: 3,370 teens nationwide) found that fewer than one-third of 1 percent of U.S. teens identified themselves as adherents of paganism (including Wicca). This indicates that the Wiccan/pagan population in the U.S. skews young; the proportion of teens identifying themselves as adherents is up to 3 times the proportion of the total population (0.3%, according to ARIS, 2001).

Another source, published before ARIS data was available:
According to the 2001 edition of David Barrett’s World Christian Encyclopedia, the largest non-Christian organized religions in the U.S. are:

  • Jews: 5.6 million
  • Muslims: 4.1 million
  • Buddhists: 2.4 million
  • Hindus: 1 million

Largest Branches of Christianity in the U.S.
(self-identification, Pew Research Council)

In February and March 2002 the Pew Research Council conducted a survey of 2,002 adults. Questions about religious preference were included. People who identified their religious preference as Christian were asked about which branch of Christianity they belonged to.

The table below was published on page 49 of the Pew report at

Survey Response %, June 1996 %, March 2001 %, March 2002
Protestant 53 53 52
Catholic 23 23 24
(Latter-day Saints)
2 2 2
Orthodox 1 1 *
Non-denominational 1 0 0
Something else (Specify) 1 * 2
Not practicing any religion 1 0 0
Don’t know/Refused 2 3 2

The percentages shown in this table reflect the number of members of each branch as a proportion of the total U.S. population, not just the Christian population. So the Catholic percentage of 24% for 2002 means that 24% of Americans identified themselves as Catholic in 2002.

This table matches data from Gallup, Barna, and other polling organizations.

>Have The Muslims Started Something?

>The news wires are all abuzz about a Chinese man attacking two American tourists on the opening day of the Olympic Games yesterday, killing one of them before committing suicide by jumping off a nearby shrine. The killing of innocent people for no apparent reason and committing suicide simultaneously or afterward is becoming endemic.

What is gained by such senseless aggression?

The aggressive Muslims–I’ll tone it down a bit–don’t know what they’re causing. Or maybe they do. They want hate and murder to abound. Hate is the opposite of love, which all religious people should espouse. Yet the Muslims, following the lead of Muhammad, seem to have a corner on killing others, setting off bombs, self-immolation that hurts others, and training others to be like them–to hate, hate, hate.

Because of lax practices in prisons, America has created a monster, a powder keg waiting to go off–all aided and abetted by Muslim imams working in prisons as consultants, leaders, chaplains, and supervisors.

The inspector general of the Department of Justice had this to say: “Chaplaincy services in the [U.S. Bureau of Prisons] remains vulnerable to infiltration by religious extremists.”

That’s really great. We spend millions of dollars to apprehend criminals, then we give them a Muslim counselor who converts them to one form of Islam, a religion of hate. Their jobs are to convert convicts and they’re doing a pretty good job of it, especially among black prisoners who start off hating society and all America has to offer. It has been estimated that there are 200,000 or more Muslims in this nation’s prisons–many of them black converts–just waiting to get out on the streets and commit–how do they say it–hA ri ‘kA ri? Ritual suicide.

They’ve filled their heads so full of this paradise idea where there are many virgins for each successful bomber male. It’s immolation Arab style, tying yourself to a bomb that goes off killing you and innocent bystanders.

Imam Warith-Deen Umar was one of the first Muslim chaplains hired to lead prayers and counsel inmates full time in American prisons. He was New York’s most influential Muslim prison chaplain, responsible for all hiring and firing of all imams in its prison system. He exercised complete control over personnel matters, including doctrinal training, before his retirement.

Under his 25-year leadership, the New York State Prison System added 56 Muslim clerics–more than any other state. Early in his career he founded the National Association of Muslim Chaplains, a recruiting operation he still runs from his home in Bethlehem, New York. The U.S. Military got its first chaplain from New York’s corps.

Umar and his 56 imams have ministered to some of the most violent members of society, converting thousands of them to Islam. This is a trend that is sweeping prisons nationwide, even alerting the sometimes somnolent FBI. It’s getting so bad that several high profile al Qaida suspects have been drawn to Islam while in prison.

This is all today. We will comment further on this highly toxic problem in America.
