In March 1988 Helsingin Sanomat journalist Jussi Vuotila was one of the first Western journalists to witness the aftermath of a deadly poison gas attack on the Iraqi Kurdish town of Halabja. In the years since the event the 63-year-old Vuotila has retired from the correspondent’s life, but he was recently invited to revisit the town, and to testify in the trial of Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as “Chemical Ali”, who is accused of being behind the attack and many other atrocities. Rather than skiing leisurely in the Helsinki woods, he found himself last week in court in Baghdad. Helsingin Sanomat followed his return to Iraq.
